В отличие от существительного вагон, сходное с ним по форме английское waggon встречается только в сочетаниях, обозначающих разные виды товарных вагонов, например: обычный товарный вагон – goods waggon, открытый товарный вагон – open goods waggon, вагон-платформа – flat waggon. Вместе с тем, waggon имеет значения, отсутствующие у существительного вагон: 'коляска', 'повозка', 'фургон', 'вагонетка для перевозки руды'. Наиболее употребительными эквивалентами существительного вагон являются английские car, carriage и coach. Car употребляется для обозначения вагона трамвая: tram-car, streetcar, а также специализированных вагонов поезда: restaurant-car (dining-car), tank car (в США словом car обозначается любой пассажирский или товарный вагон). Carriage употребляется, когда речь идет о пассажирском вагоне: мягкий вагон – soft-seated carriage, жесткий вагон – hard-seated carriage, спальный вагон – sleeping carriage (разг. sleeper), детский вагон – children's carriage, вагон для курящих – smoking carriage (smoker), вагон первого (второго, третьего) класса – first (second, third)-class carriage. Children's также употребляется в значении 'характерный для детского возраста': детские болезни – children's diseases.
